What is FiveM? A beginner's guide (2026)

FiveM is the free PC platform that almost every GTA roleplay server runs on. Here's what it is, who runs it, and what you need to start.

FiveM in one paragraph

FiveM is a multiplayer modification framework for Grand Theft Auto V on PC. Instead of joining Rockstar's GTA Online lobbies, you connect to servers run by communities. Each server can add its own cars, maps, weapons, jobs and scripts, which is how roleplay cities create their own police forces, economies and storylines. Servers can also be built for racing, drifting, deathmatch or anything else.

Who makes it?

FiveM is made by Cfx.re, a team that has worked on its framework in various forms since 2014. Cfx.re also makes RedM, the equivalent for Red Dead Redemption 2. In August 2023 Cfx.re became part of Rockstar Games, so FiveM is now Rockstar's own platform.

What does the "M" stand for?

Modifications, according to Cfx.re, not multiplayer.

Is it free and safe?

  • Free: the client is a free download from fivem.net. Only download it there, and never pay a third party for "access".
  • GTA Online: Cfx.re says FiveM doesn't modify your game files and only contacts Rockstar's services to check you own GTA V, so you can switch between FiveM and GTA Online.
  • Legit copy needed: FiveM won't work with pirated copies of GTA V.

Is it the only option?

In practice, yes. Rockstar's licence for multiplayer modding treats FiveM as the only authorised platform for GTA V. The two older alternatives, alt:V and RAGE:MP, both announced shutdowns in 2026, with RAGE:MP scheduled to stop by 31 August 2026.

Can I play on PS5 or Xbox?

No. Cfx.re says FiveM isn't feasible on consoles and is developed only for PC. More on FiveM and consoles.

What about GTA 6?

GTA VI launches on 19 November 2026 on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. Rockstar describes it as a single-player experience and hasn't announced a PC version, a roleplay mode or FiveM support. Can you roleplay in GTA 6?

What do I need?

  • A Windows PC that runs GTA V (see FiveM requirements)
  • A legitimate PC copy of GTA V
  • The free FiveM client
  • A headset with a microphone, as many roleplay servers use voice chat
